This is a follow up video to my original Android on Rhodium video. It’s pretty much a progress report of last months video. Here are some of the major changes that’s been going on in porting Android over to the Rhodium devices.

Things that work (voice calls, sms, txt, data, android market, google maps, livewallpaper *Nexus One style wallpapers, in fact when you sign in with your gmail account on the phone google sends you an e-mail congratulating you on your purchase of the Nexus One!!!*, hardware key mapping *Tilt 2 keyboard layout still not mapped yet.*) Things that don’t work (WiFi, Bluetooth, Camera, GPS, G-Sensor, Sound, Power management) Things that were fixed since last video (screen alignment issues fixed, voice calls, sms, txt, data) The devs at XDA are making good progress with this project, expect to see more functionality very soon as they are all working hard to come up with a build we can use on a daily basis but for now these builds are too unstable and incomplete to be used as your full time phone OS.

References:
Package Build – (The build package I used in this video, basically the latest XDANDROID build with the latest zImage config files specifically for the Rhodium) – http://hotfile.com/dl/25896717/98aaa1…
XDA-Developers.com Forum Threads:
Main Android Porting Thread (Most up to date porting status, issues etc.) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showt…
Daily zImage (kernel) autobuilds (if you haven’t a clue what the zImage or kernel is you might want to skip this one till you learn a bit more) http://glemsom.anapnea.net/android/ht…
XDAndroid builds and new (not just for Rhodium but a lot of other HTC devices as well) http://www.connect-utb.com/index.php

FAQ:
Q: Will this damage my phone?
A: There is always a chance of damaging your phone, but generally these builds are safe enough to try out. Again standard disclaimer, the devs and I take no responsibility in the event you damage your phone.

Q: I installed it on my phone, this and that is not working, whats going on?
A: These are VERY early builds and a work in progress most thing are not going to work for now. Don’t expect to install this and have it working like your friends Android phone any time soon.

Q: If I boot Android do I have to reinstall Windows Mobile afterwards?
A: Nope, for now Android boots off to RAM so your ROM is untouched. The only thing that gets changed is your phones time due to he way Android records time. Everything in your windows should remain the same when you boot back into it.

Q: I’m really interested in trying this out where do I go for more info?
A: There are several sites you can check out to learn more about porting/installing Android. If this is your first time trying it out it’s best you use a prepackaged build like the one linked above (See Package Build link in References).

Q: Will there be more video updates?
A: That will depend on the feedback I get. I made the first video because someone in the xda forums requested a video tutorial on how to do all this. Sometimes its better to sit and watch a boring 10min video than read a few thousand posts and trying to piece things together. =) Source

Note: If you have a problem with the newer HTC Sense 2.1 versions (the ones with the weather clock) go to Settings -> Wallpaper and select YES for the USE DEFAULT WALLPAPER option. Then follow the above steps. Thanks to lefty11 for figuring this out.

In the past I have struggled with screen protectors, and got so mad I almost broke a phone over it. So hopefully this can prevent a few people from wanting to pull their hair out. I have heard of many different methods people use, but for me this has been the easiest and has had the best results for me. The pictures are of the stock screen protector I just applied to my Touch Pro 2.

Here goes:

-Get a bowl or a cup of water.

-Add a few drops of dish detergent and mix into the water.

-Go into the bathroom and turn the shower on hot to get it steamy to drop any dust to the floor.

-Remove the battery to be extra safe.

-Scrub your fingers with rubbing alcohol to remove oil from your fingers.

-Make sure the screen is clean and dust free.

-Peel/open the screen protector.

-Dip it lightly into the soap solution.

-Lay the protector on the screen.

-You should be able to move the protector around enough to prescisly position it.

-Since it is wet there should be very few air bubbles if any, and if there is they will push out very easily when wet.

-In a short time the protector will adhere in place.

-Let dry overnight before putting the battery back in.

-If there are any imperfections they will go away completley in a few days, unless there is dust under it.

-You may notice some light spots/haze/white film in areas after the application, but any spots will go away in 1-2 days.

See the pictures I took, you can barely tell there is a screen protector on at all, not one air bubble or imperfection.

-Good luck!

Extra tips:
**dont go crazy with the solution, just dab a little on the screen and dip the protector lightly and shake off excess before applying.

***Also, I would suggest taking this preventative measure with your moisture sensors.

1- Cut a small piece of paper just a bit bigger than the size of the moisture sensor.
2- stick that to a piece of clear tape.(see pics)
3- Cut out around the paper leaving a little tape on each side of the paper.
4- Place the paper/tape over the sensor.
*never stick tape directly to the sensor because it will pull the sensor right off when you try to remove the tape!
Now you are left with a protected moisture sensor just in case something like this should ever happen to you!!

All MSM7K are technically capable, but only HTC’s may have the correct drivers. Will probably not work on stock ROMs. I suspect the CDMA versions of the older MSM7K devices – pre-diamond – do not have the necessary drivers either. As far as I know, the first device that came with these drivers is the Kaiser, but IIRC they are also included in various Polaris ROMs.

About
Short and simple, GfxBoost activates “QTV” mode for specific surfaces. This makes for example DirectDraw display smoother and: a bit slower or significantly faster, depending on how you look at it. It also seems to have a small effect on Direct3D/OpenGL.

Err, what?
Right, this is a bit tricky! If you will benchmark it the result will be lower FPS. However, it will actually appear faster. This is because normally, not all frames are actually drawn on-screen, and the timing of the drawing can be so it appears nothing is being actually drawn at all. This does not happen when using GfxBoost – more is actually drawn to the screen, and smoother. So, from the application’s point of view, it can do less per second, but from what you actually see on-screen, more happens! If you don’t understand what I mean, just take it from me: it definitely looks better

Quirks
Alright, it took a bit of research, a lot of trial and error, quite a bit of hairpulling, a few hours of IDA, and an entire crate of beer to get this working on the few of my devices I actually bothered to test it on (Kaiser and Touch Pro). I think everything is now properly hooked up with HTC’s own software so things like Camera and WMP also still work. If you run into anything, strange, well, first RTFM below, then see if you want to post it here.

TFM (The F*ing Manual, read it!)

Requirements
An HTC-built MSM7K-based device, sporting QTV and some similar nonsense. In general, I would say this this is the entire range between the Vogue and the Touch Pro, though I’ve only tested it on Kaiser and Touch Pro, and both are GSM.

Installation

Install the CAB on your device

Soft-reset (does not seem to be needed on all devices)

Start GfxBoost and click Enable

Uninstallation

Start GfxBoost (if not running) and click Disable

Uninstall CAB as usual

Upgrading

Install new CAB

Soft-reset

“What’s this Enabled (Inactive) status?
It means another application is running that needs this chipset feature. For example, Windows Media Player, YouTube, Camera, etc. As soon as you exit all of those, GfxBoost should re-activate itself.

“I see no difference Q_Q”
If there’s a visible difference depends completely on the application you are running and what you are doing with it (aside from it possibly just not working for you). The more graphical an application is, the more chance you have this makes a difference. I’ve seen no differences with normal “GDI” style applications (normal apps), but for example on my Kaiser the difference in Manila 2D is enormous.

“What about this video-running-in-the-background-thing I keep reading about?”
If done properly, that has the same effect as GfxBoost. Just not as easy and it doesn’t think about other applications that need this chipset feature.

bla bla Coreplayer bla bla
Exactly!

I’ve noticed a lot of threads discussing video performance on these devices, however very few actually go into detail and explain why certain things will get you better performance. I’m NOT an HTC engineer or anything (ie. I’m not responsible for the accuracy of this information) however I’ve been around the block with mobile platforms, and hopefully some of you will find this useful/interesting.

——————————

Fact: The Qualcomm MSM chips in our phones are VERY capable of displaying full-sized full-motion VGA video.

Problem: It can’t be done with the standard video driver methods (DirectDraw, GDI, etc).

Whether this is because of a driver mismatch or perhaps a limitation of the hardware is a different story altogether (I honestly think either one could be true- VGA is a lot of pixels), however the point is that you will NOT get compelling video using those methods.

Solution: Qtv driver

Qualcomm has created its own proprietary video delivery driver, called Qtv. Qtv actually delivers full hardware accelerated video performance on Qualcomm based CPUs, and will easily outperform DirectDraw or any other method when it comes to pumping video.

Problem: Since its proprietary and only compatible with Qualcomm CPUs, most major video players (DivX mobile, TCPMP, etc) do NOT offer it.

So, you are stuck with DirectDraw at best, and that will without a doubt drop frames when playing VGA-sized video.

Solution: Qtv IS supported by the bundled software in HTC devices (Windows Media Player, HTC Album, YouTubePlayer, etc).

I feel like most people in this forum have a natural dislike for the bloated WMP (I include myself in that boat), so many of us have been reluctant to try this. However, after some initial skepticism, I have to admit this is one of those rare occasions that WMP will actually play a video BETTER than the third party players.
Even better than WMP, however, is HTC Album. Normally used just for pictures taken with the device’s camera, Album also supports playing back videos recorded in the camera’s MP4 format.
It doesn’t HAVE to be taken from the camera, however- any video compressed into MP4 (check out this easy GUI encoder over at XDA) will play fine, although you may need to drop it into “My Documents\My Videos” to show up in the list.

Problem: Mp4-only is sort of annoying? What about DivX? Or alternative players using Qtv?

Problem is, Qtv is proprietary and owned by Qualcomm. They won’t give out the code unless you pay for the licensing fees. That’s why only the HTC bundled apps use it at the moment.

Coreplayer 1.3 sort of supports QtV, however. I say sort of because they don’t REALLY have full acceleration (decoding, drawing, etc), but rather figured out enough of it to create a Qtv hardware overlay. You may have heard of overlays from PC DVD/video player apps which use the graphics card hardware to scale and draw video to a dedicated area of the screen, freeing up the CPU to do other things. The Qtv overlay works in much of the same way- it creates a bounding box that Qtv uses to display the video as decoded from the CPU. This is as opposed to FULL hardware acceleration, in which much of the decoding is offset to the video hardware as well, freeing up even more CPU time.

The end result? You can get pretty darned good DivX playback with CorePlayer 1.3 using Qtv video method, however it is not as accelerated as Mp4 with HTC Album (in fact, Mp4 in Coreplayer 1.3 still lags and drops many frames).

The only problem with Coreplayer’s overlay method is that when using Video Out of the Touch Pro, it will create a blue flicker. This is NOT a problem with Qtv, but I beleive rather the overlay updating due to this half-way method of pumping out frames. Hopefully CorePlayer will find a way around this in the next version, or even better- get the real full acceleration from Qualcomm!

NOTE: Do NOT try using Qtv on the earlier versions of CorePlayer unless you have a Fuze. In v1.1, they introduced Qtv in beta stage, however the GSM Qualcomm chips use slightly different code than CDMA ones. Version 1.1 supported only the GSM version, which would only display a blank screen on CDMA devices, and sometimes even lock up the device.

Sprint Touch Pro Cleanup by GoodThings2Life

With all the requests to “clean house” on the stock ROMs, and also with a recognition that some people either can’t or aren’t ready to use a custom ROM (translation: business users and new users), I’ve put together an easily installed package that helps us trim the fat from the OEM customizations.

With that in mind, here are the instructions and guidelines for these packages. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY… I AM WILLING TO HELP WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM, BUT IF YOU DON’T READ THE INFORMATION, I WON’T BE INCLINED TO REPEAT MYSELF.

Installing this will make several modifications to your Sprint* Touch Pro configuration to make it perform faster, have relatively stable battery life, and still provide a functional experience. DO NOT USE THIS PACKAGE ON A NON-SPRINT TOUCH PRO! If this thread is popular, and if I can get my hands on the variants, I may package them in the future.

NOTE #1: This will remove the shortcuts to all Sprint content, so if you really need those links, be sure to use the supplemental Restore Sprint Shortcuts package. That said, it is very much a “Sprint” configuration, so no specialized skins, etc. beyond what are documented below.

NOTE #2: There are four variations based on whether you prefer Large/Small Start Menu Icons and/or the Full/Light AudioPara Volume Increase, so feel free to use the one appropriate for your preferences.

NOTE #3: I will fix any issues with these packages, but I won’t necessarily be adding any new features or skins. This is intended to provide as many of the “essentials” as possible without a lot of hassle. I also have limited time to work on these things, and well to be honest… if you want to go beyond the essentials, you should really be looking at Custom ROM development.

NOTE #4: Advanced users are more than welcome to edit the _setup.xml file within the cab files and continue customizing it as they see fit.

As I said before, I really consider this to be a Quick Essentials tool for those who aren’t willing or aren’t ready for ROM cooking.

UPDATE #1: I have posted the “tweaksonly” version that only changes the registry settings and leaves all the shortcuts alone.

– Here is a list of the tweaks offered in the standard package…

———————————

1. All shortcuts re-arranged for better organization (See important note and screenshot below).
2. Sprint program shortcuts removed. (See Supplemental Package “restore_sprint_shortcuts.cab” if you want to restore them to the “Sprint Mobile” folder as shown below).
3. Small Icons Used (see alternate versions if you like big icons).

Please pay attention to this part! The programs that come with the phone are moved to the Start Menu and are categorized into “Office Mobile, Windows Live Mobile, and Windows Mobile”. Only the Sprint Shortcuts are deleted, which is why the cab file is included. Programs YOU install are left alone, and those are the programs you’ll see in the “Recent” list. Here is a screenshot of how it appears with Large Icons enabled:

1. Save the file somewhere convenient, like your Desktop or My Documents.
2. Connect your phone to your computer using your USB cable.
3. When ActiveSync pops up, let it do its thing, and then click the “Explore” button on the toolbar.
4. Copy the file (drag and drop usually works best) to the phone. That said, I strongly recommend putting it on your storage card.
5. Disconnect the phone from the computer.
6. On the phone, go to Start > Programs > File Explorer.
7. Find the file on your storage card (or My Documents or wherever you put it).
8. Tap on the file to open the zip file… then tap on the cab inside… when prompted, tap Install. It will require you to do a soft reset when it finishes.

Troubleshooting:
—————-

If it doesn’t work, read the instructions more thoroughly and try again. If the install doesn’t work for some reason and reports that it cannot be installed, then chances are I mangled something in the _setup.xml file OR you have something on your phone already that the cab doesn’t like. Keep in mind, I’ve only tested this on my phone which was just hard reset in order to make sure the installers worked.

If it doesn’t work for you, let me know which file you used and I’ll make sure the installer isn’t broken. Beyond that, you’re on your own to figure out if any programs you’ve installed are unhappy with the modifications.

A couple other comments… unfortunately, this cannot be uninstalled without a hard reset. There are too many registry and file changes to do so. HOWEVER, in the next couple days I’ll try to build an additional cab that undoes everything in order to prevent hard resets.

———————————————
Why THIS configuration? Why THESE settings?
———————————————

I chose this configuration because for the past year, I’ve observed my own usage habits as well as the habits of about 20 people that I work with as well as a significant number of users here who frequently post looking for things of this nature. My goal is to provide an experience that is functional but lightweight and efficient. Every program is no more than 2-3 taps away, and the settings are set so that the Windows Mobile experience is as fast, power conservative, and finger friendly as possible.
