Use Skype in Egypt & You May Go To Jail!

Ever since I received my MacBook Pro with a built in webcam (my last laptop lacked one) I have been a die hard evangelist fro Skype! But if you are in Egypt and share my passion for Skype it may land you in jail.

“The ban is on Skype on mobile internet, not on fixed, and this is due to the fact it is against the law since it bypasses the legal gateway,” said Amr Badawy, the executive president of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA).

Under Egyptian law, international calls must pass through a network controlled by majority state-owned Telecom Egypt, which this week reported disappointing earnings

“We are targeting any illegal voice traffic on the mobile (internet),” Badawy said, adding that the ban was communicated to the three mobile operators earlier this week. “Any traffic outside the international gateway is against the law.”

Mozilla No Longer Developing Firefox For Windows Mobile

My dreams have just been crushed! Mozilla has stopped development on their verison of Firefox for Windows Mobile phones. Now I am not opposed to Opera which I have running now, but I am only using it because it is the lesser of two evils.

Mozilla was preparing to develop a version of Firefox for Windows Mobile, and the development work Mozilla has done on Windows CE 6 has left it “well positioned to have an awesome browser on Windows Phone 7,” according to Parmenter.

But the absence of a software development kit for native applications has made it impossible for Mozilla to move forward, he said.

Microsoft will only support development of applications running in the Silverlight runtime environment, or of games in the XNA Game Studio runtime environment, it announced last week at its Mix conference. It will not allow third party app developers direct access to the phone’s hardware, where they might be better able to exploit its potential.

Very Impressed With Windows Mobile 6.5

Alright it took me a while to get things backed up and ready to go but I finally upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5. I know for the other carries you must think I am extremely late but us Sprint users are ecstatic! After making the switch my tp2 truly feels as if I were handling a new device.

The interface seems to be much more responsive, noticeably more stylish, and things that required cabs to customize before are now stock. The one down side that I must say is one that is at no fault to windows mobile at all. It is really a personal problem that wm 6.5 solved for me just a bit too late.

What happened was for the longest I was looking for a decent twitter app to use on my phone. The ones I came across all cost money but I just figured it would not hurt to spend a few bucks. The app worked just as advertised and I had no problems with it. The reason I am upset it because I purchased the app two days before the wm 6.5 update was release. After updating I came to find out that the new os already had a twitter application in it stock from the box. So I essentially wasted $2 but that is definitely not going to kill me.

I am interested in hearing about your experience with wm 6.5. What do you think of it, what do you think should be changed in future versions? And if you have not already be sure to upgrade from the link below. It is a very worth while upgrade!

Well it is finally here. I mentioned a few weeks back that it was due in March but nobody really knew when in March. Ofcourse it was later than sooner but we have t and that is all that matters. Most probably already have some cooked ROM running but for the rest lets enjoy Windows Mobile 6.5!

Official Sprint WM6.5 Update For TP2 Due In March

This took entirely too long but Sprint is finally releasing windows mobile 6.5 for the Touch Pro 2. Most advanced users already are most likely running some ROM that has 6.5 on it already but for the users that like to keep their phone pretty stock this will be a welcomed upgrade. So stay tuned and I will let you know when it becomes available to the public.

Apple sues HTC for infringing 20 iPhone patents

Things are starting to hit the fan for HTC with Apple suing them over 20 patent infringements. This story has been developing for the last couple days and finally we have some details for you. Check below for more on this story.

Apple’s asking for a permanent injunction, which would bar HTC from importing or selling phones here that use these patents, along with triple damages with maximum interest. As you can see, some of the patents are fairly broad, like “unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image”.

Steve Jobs has this statement:

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Apparently HTC was just as surprised to hear about this according to their statement:

“We only learned of Apple’s actions based on your stories and Apple’s press release. We have not been served any papers yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.”

Touch Pro Info: Hosting Transfer & Downtime

I apologize for the lack of updates these past few days. I am in the process of transferring the hosting accounts on my sites and have been on the phone with customer support to ensure the process goes as streamline as possible.

The process is about 90% complete; I am just having trouble with the sub-domain attached one of the accounts.

The site itself has been successfully transferred as well as the email accounts, yet support is having issues locating the appropriate files for the forum causing it to hold up the process. What I feared most about doing this was the downtime that it would have for each site but thankfully it was kept to a minimum (expect for the forum which is still down).

I cannot be any more please with the support Hostgator has offered in this entire process. They have been very patient and helpful with me calling them numerous times throughout the day and night. Without them, this would have never gotten done and knowing I have a team like them behind my hosting puts my mind at ease.

Bear with me by giving me a bit more time; then things will be back to normal. Once I finish getting my hosting situated on my sites I will be back at full speed.
